I’m gradually ticking things off my list in preparation for showing work @collectartfair with @craftscotland in March. I’m so excited to be travelling down to London to see the show myself to see outstanding works from international artists and meet new contacts. I’m looking forward to hearing some of the leading experts in contemporary craft in a talks programme too. Three of my moon jars and an additional piece will be showing @somersethouse in West Wing, W10. Friday 3 - 5 March, with previews on Wed 1 & 2 March 2023. I place great importance on finishing my vessels well with particular emphasis on the lip as this edge forms the vital transition from interior space to exterior surface and for me must be even and smooth to catch the light and lead the eye around the form. Moon Jar 1, smoke fired, textured white clay showing @collectartfair in March with @craftscotland I started making moon jars in 2019 after seeing Lucie Rie’s 17th Century moon jar at the British Museum, she had it on long loan from her friend Bernard Leach. Unlike the traditional Korean thrown pieces my moon jars are coil built with layers of pressed, grogged clay. In the video I’m blending a coil in the interior and smoothing the outer surface, I spend hours working on these vessels to refine and finish them.
